Our Expeditions
For over a decade, MegaFin Expeditions has been conducting world-class, hosted fishing expeditions targeting powerful predator fish in exclusive Columbian saltwater and jungle fisheries.
Tucanare Gigantes - Amazon base camp (hosted trip)
Max 8 guests per week with a four-week availability falling between Jan - March
Springing to life in the Tuhani mountain range and stretching over 1300 kilometers, the mighty Inírida river cuts through a remote area of the Amazon Rainforest in the Guainía region of Colombia. (This river flows through immense pristine jungle of which has been the only proclaimed green space to receive full protective rights equal to that of a human).
A countless maze of tributaries and lagoons feed the Inírida river and play host to what we know to be the best trophy peacock bass fishery in the world. Working closely with local communities has allowed us temporary annual access to this area for a brief window of opportunity, and that’s exactly the way we like it. The fierce protection of this unique area by its indigenous tribes has allowed it to remain pristine. This undisrupted state is bolstered by only granting 4 weeks of access to the outside world each year, allowing the fish to grow to exceptional sizes.
Monster peacocks are not the only adversaries that prowl these primal waters! Anglers need to be prepared to square off with: Morocoto, Payara, Bicuda, Black Piranha & the feared Pez Lobo.
Additionally, an entire range of predatory catfish stalk this river that will readily attack a well-placed fly or lure, including: Surubim, Jundia, Jau, Redtail and Piraiba.
Orinoco Tucanare River Lodge (hosted trip)
Max 8 guests per week during Mid-Jan thru end of March
Welcome to big country and one seriously massive river, the impressive Orinoco. Boasting the title of fourth largest river in the world, the Orinoco stretches an impressive 2140km from its source in the Prima Mountain range and directly affects a watershed of over 880 000 km2, known as the Orinoquia.
Under the watchful eye of the local Sikuani tribe, the broad Orinoco flows with conviction and is directed by tremendous granite buttresses that are sure to leave you in awe. This deep and powerful river can produce the fish of legend that regularly spool anglers.
Anglers will spend time here exploring clear flowing tributaries and hidden lagunas and can stand in foot deep, crystal-clear water when casting to giant Peacocks, many over 20lbs. These fish will attack anything in their vicinity with sheer reckless abandon. The action in these shallow waters is chaotic, hence the friendly “hand-to-hand combat” designation we’ve given these sections of the river.
The giant peacock (temensis) and aggressive butterfly peacock (ocellatis) reign supreme here; however, for those world record aficionadas there are also: Intermedia, Orinocensis, Monoculus, and Piquita peacocks in this area. Other special and abundant species that hunt these waters include: Payara, Blue Ariwana, Pacu, Payarin, Red & Black Piranha, Agujetos and everyone’s favorite, the powerful and agile Sardinata!
And backing up this full deck is an entire family of catfish that are always willing to entertain: Red tail, Tiger, Flat Whiskered and the impressive Valenton.
The El Choco (hosted trip)
Max 8 guests per week during Mid – April thru November
For this expedition we find ourselves on the rugged Pacifico coastline of Colombia. This area is known as the Choco coast and is fringed by the most impenetrable forested region on earth. This mystical jungle, called the Darien Gap, boasting the impressive title of the richest biosphere on the planet. (Over 650 bird species make the Choco the bird capital of the world).
This craggy coastline sports countless rocky outcrops and long stretches of sandy beach. The mountainous pinnacles that rise from the bedrock are the perfect backdrop for some serious fishing.
This is a playground for pop and jig fanatics, we also highly encourage you to add a fly rod to your arsenal. Bring you biggest and baddest plugs, swim baits and metal and make sure your flies are huge!
The fishing year starts in earnest around mid-April, triggered by a massive run of sardines, numbering in the millions. This little fish takes advantage of the Humboldt current, which serves as their highway and runs up tight against the shoreline. Anglers that join us later in the season will be fishing amongst giants, as these are the nursing grounds of humpback whales. All the action here takes place within a mere 1-3 mile range from the mainland.
Normally large schools of giant snook and amber jack will kick start the season followed by an influx of marlin, sailfish, tarpon, yellowfin tuna, and large bull dorado. Also, the tremendous cubera snapper, a.k.a “reef gorillas”, are truly impressive here and plan their attack from the knurly fringes of the underlying reefs. On the surface, the unmistakable rooster fish will often strut their colors. The ever-present, menacing schools of Crevalle, world-class Bluefin trevally, and horse-eye jack are over-the-top fun. Toothy speedsters are also never too far away with wahoo, hound fish, and Sierra mackerel always ready to bite.
Llanos Base lodge (hosted trip)
Min 2 and Max 8 Anglers during Mid – Jan thru the end March
Welcome to the Eastern Savana of beautiful Colombia, home of the proud Llaneros Cowboys. This biosphere not only boasts many staggeringly beautiful tributaries of the Orinoco river, but also plays host to some of the most amazing fauna and flora. However, once again it’s the bird life that really shines here.
The tributaries in this vicinity where some of the first to obtain full protective status and have had countless programs and studies over the years from local and worldwide authorities keeping this unique biosphere under protection.
With the sport industry doing its part with a strong Catch, Care and Release policy, this has made this area an amazing and diverse fishery, these healthy tributaries and lagoons produce large populations of healthy sized peacocks.
Massive peacocks can be found in and around shallow sandbars flushing out cornered baitfish. Anglers need to be at the ready to deliver casts straight into the heart of this action, which is sure to trigger the fish to strike. Fishing the deeper pools of the river presents anglers with ample opportunity to catch the formidable Payara. Accurate casts along the fringe of the overlying vegetation will connect anglers with the powerful Pacu or the feisty blue arowana; however, given the outstanding array of species hunting just below the surface, one is never really sure what will be first to the hook.
